JOHANNESBURG – University students have gathered at the Randburg magistrates court, where former deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana is appearing on assault charges.

The students from institutions including University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Fort Hare say that Manana should undergo rehabilitation after he allegedly beat up two women at a Johannesburg nightclub in August.

He’s admitted to slapping one of them.

Manana resigned from the Education Ministry but remains a Member of Parliament.

These students say they’re not taking sides and they’re praying for both Manana and his alleged victims.

“We’re supporting him on the basis that we want to walk this path with him, we don’t want to cast him out. Because too many people have been cast out in South Africa and that’s why we’re such a violent state.”

This student says they want Manana to be rehabilitated so he can help those who abuse women.

“Speak to other men. And be the champion by saying I’ve been there, I’ve made a mistake. And, let no other men go through that.”

Manana is out on R5,000 bail.
