JOHANNESBURG – The lawyer representing the six expelled Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors says the party has failed to charge another member who also attended Mogale City’s budget vote, insisting that his clients have been unfairly treated.

The red berets decided to sack six of its nine councillors from the municipality, saying that they defied the party’s decision to boycott the budget vote and sided with the African National Congress.

The councillors went to court to stop the Independent Electoral Commission from filling the vacancies, pending the EFF’s disciplinary processes.

However, the court has dismissed their application saying that it’s not urgent.

The six expelled EFF councillors are expected to return to court on Friday to file a new application after their urgent one was dismissed.

Advocate Katleho Mofokeng insists that they never voted on the day of the budget, they only attended the meeting.

“There were seven councillors on that particular day. Why wasn’t he charged?”

Mofokeng says that his clients want to remain EFF members and have no intention of joining another party.

The EFF, meanwhile, says they’ve welcomed the court’s decision to dismiss their urgent application, saying they are only driven by money and not service.
